The world of work offers less stability and security than it used to. We can’t necessarily count on our full time jobs lasting for as long as we want them to. And if you have a full time job, you’re probably thinking about it in a more entrepreneurial way than the generations before you.
Kimberly Palmer is an editor, author, and personal finance expert. At the time of this interview she was the senior money editor and Alpha Consumer blogger at U.S. News & World Report. She is the author of The Economy of You, Generation Earn, and Smart Mom Rich Mom. In this interview, which was originally published in 2014, Kimberly and I talk about gaining traction in your side business.
Kimberly was thinking about the general lack of job stability and security in the workplace when she started her own side business on Etsy. She found it creatively satisfying, professionally satisfying, and beneficial for her life, career, and financial security.
Starting a side business is easier now than it has ever been before because of the software and platforms that are available, as well as the general acceptance and normalization of having a side-gig. Side businesses also give people skills that they can incorporate into their full time jobs.
As you listen I invite you to think about your own career and career desires. Even if starting a side business is not your path, you can still take away lessons from this episode about entrepreneurial mindset and how to look out for yourself and brand yourself within your current company and career.
